Roadside, Jump Starts and Lockouts in Corpus Christi, TX

Most roadside calls are not tows at all. The car is fine, something small stopped it, and a truck showing up with a jump pack or a lockout kit gets you moving without ever hooking up.

Why batteries die here

Up north cold gets blamed for dead batteries. On the Gulf coast it is heat, which cooks the electrolyte and shortens battery life by a year or more compared with a mild climate. If your battery is over three summers old and it needed a jump this week, it is not going to make it much longer. Replace it rather than keeping jumper cables in the trunk.

The corrosion nobody checks

Salt air does real damage to terminals within sight of the water. A crusty terminal makes a healthy battery act completely dead, and a jump will sometimes work just well enough to convince you the battery is the problem. If there is white or blue-green build up on the posts, that is worth cleaning before you buy anything.

Lockouts

A lockout is a tool and a technique, not force. It should not damage the door or the weather seal. The one thing that changes the whole call is somebody being inside the vehicle, especially a child or a dog in summer heat, and in that case you call emergency services first and a tow company second.

Flats and the spare that is not there

Plenty of newer vehicles ship with a tire inflator kit instead of a spare, which does nothing for a sidewall cut. If your tire is shredded rather than punctured, skip the roadside change and go straight to a tow, because there is nothing to put on.

Questions people ask about roadside, jump starts and lockouts

Can you bring gas?

Fuel delivery is a normal roadside call. You get enough to reach a station, not a full tank.

My car starts with a jump then dies at the next stop.

That points at the alternator rather than the battery. Get it towed instead of chasing it, because it will strand you again within a few miles.
